DANGER TAKES A VACATION

Bend, OR, USA

A busy Seattle family likes to spend their weekends in Bend, Oregon. They wanted a tough and industrial house with clean finishes, a strong connection to the outdoors, almost total privacy and lots of storage for their messy weekend gear. This black-metal-clad construct on a concrete pad at first glance appears almost impenetrable, but gradually reveals a softer side as it opens to the private grove of trees and view to the north with walls of glass that slide open to connect seamlessly to the outside when weather permits. The tough black exterior conceals an interior that is wall to wall white, with polished concrete floors and colorful art and furniture to warm and personalize the space. A fire pit in back extends the season for sitting outdoors, and a funky, circle-happy landscape design in the courtyard, inspired by a rotund pizza oven, is the final surprise in this unexpected house. Designed with help from Bend Architect, Gary Holbrook from HD Architecture.
